What you described about Japanese Christians always eating together after church… that sound very beautiful. It sounds less like a social club and more “familial,” as you said, like an extension of your family, and even as something of a loner, I long for that sort of community.
Agreed! It’s one of the best things about the Japanese church, I think, and something that seems to be ignored by Christians sharing about Christianity in Japan for some reason.
The funny thing is all the churches I’ve been to were fairly large (maybe smallest was like 100 people) so I also haven’t experienced those after service lunches, but this is obviously a combined effect of being in Tokyo and going to international ones rather than Japanese ones. Honestly kind of disappointed in myself in not exploring other churches. Maybe I should make an effort to do so in my few remaining months…
Yeah, you do live in a bit of an exception area…
Also on this topic, I thought I should mention that Korean churches to the same, at least in my experience. I went to a number of different Korean churches growing up, and each one sat down for a homemade meal in the fellowship hall after service. I remember helping my mom prepare one or two of these meals.
Despite not being Christian I actually really love this podcast. Really glad I stumbled across this one. I enjoyed hearing about the lifestyle you live in Japan at the moment and learning about the Christian culture in Japan. Keep it up, your podcasts are great!
