Something More: One Punch Man and Religious Censorship, Jesus in FFX, and Fruits of the Pikachu

It’s near the end of the year, and this Something More column will be the last of 2015. Actually, it may be the last for quite a while. We’ll be taking a break from Something More for at least the foreseeable future. Thank you, readers, for perusing through these wonderful articles each week, and thank you, authors, for your wonderful perspectives on anime, manga, and religion.

In the meantime, check out this gaggle of terrific posts:

CJ uses a story about her dad watching One Punch Man to illustrate her hopes for open outsiders who might watch anime, as opposed to those who might declare anything containing violence or magic as evil, which is unfortunately commonplace among many religious people.

Final Fantasy X attacks what religion can become without necessarily being anti-religious, which brings to mind Christ’s condemnations of the Pharisees while he, of course, worshipped God.

Handaa’s transformation over the course of Barakamon requires certain changes on his part which perhaps mirror those a Christian, too, must accept.

In the Fullmetal Alchemist manga, King Bradley asks the question, Is God a made-up entity for the weak? Is he right?

Among the Christmas movie recommendations from religion website Patheos is Tokyo Godfathers, though it may bring up some uncomfortable questions!

Homeless godfathers and modern wisemen
Yep, this is a questionable foursome. But the questions (and answers), I think, are good.

Every once and a while, a religious cult produces an anime movie or series. Mike Toole of ANN digs into these unique properties.

Geeky characters personifying the fruits of the spirit? Yep. And Pikachu gets “joy.”

Have you ever prayed to God before taking a final or other test? That’s kind of how Soul Eater’s Crona relies on Maka to just make it through.

Finally, on a joyful note, JekoJeko is returning to blogging! One of the most outstanding voices in aniblogging and a writer whose pieces have frequently been featured here, he’s been much missed!

As part of the Something More series of posts, Beneath the Tangles links to writings about anime and manga that involve religion and spirituality.  If you’ve written such a piece or know of one, please email TWWK to be included. Special thanks to Don of Zoopraxiscope Too for notifying me about the Tokyo Godfathers post and Justin of OASG for the One Punch Man article!

  1. I’m sorry to see this go, but I must say thank you for linking my articles so often! It’s helped me grow so much as a writer. This article always made me feel inter connected with the beautiful Christian otaku world and I know we need to band together – all forms of Christian geeks at that 🙂
