  1. The best anime series of all time? Where are Haibane Renmei, Serial Experiments Lain and Dennou Coil? Or Mononoke, Tengen Toppa Gurren Lagann, Kill la Kill and Kino’s Journey? Or Madoka Magica? Cardcaptor Sakura? Tatami Galaxy? Shin Sekai Yori? Shingu? Paranoia Agent? Pupipo? Natsume Yujincho? You might want to reconsider your selection criteria.

    1. Hey Don,

Thanks for commenting! I get the frustration when not seeing a series you think belongs in the top of all time included.

The list of series included in our March Madness is a followup to our 2016 March Madness Tournament. Last year’s Top 16 as voted on by the readers at Beneath the Tangles remained in this years polls. We then selected 16 additional series which were generally newer shows to put them up against last year’s Top 16. The plan for next year is to take this year’s Top 16 and bring in 16 more newcomers each year.

Hope that clarifies things. Make sure to get in there and vote, though!

    2. Have to agree with Don, here. Madoka Magica wasn’t just a great series, it was a paradigm breaker that animators and scholars of animation will be arguing over for decades to come. Psycho-Pass? You wouldn’t find tighter plotting in a Raymond Chandler novel, or more thought-provoking themes in Orwell’s. Haibane Renmei is just flat-out astonishing, a long-time favorite of mine. Don’t get me wrong, there’s good work on this list, but seriously: Code Geass–better than NGE? Angel Beats–better than Clannad? And Dragon Ball Z? Pokemon? Full Metal Alchemist? Kid’s stuff.

Eh, maybe I’m too old for lists like this. I’ll shut up now.

      1. It’s all good, Clinesterton Beademung. Remember – this is still, at it’s core, an online popularity poll that we’re putting together for fun! Last year’s Top 16 came back with some more recently popular series thrown in to keep this polling interesting this year. Is it perfect? of course not. Then again, I’m a balding dude in his 30s with a fun underbite – so, clearly I’m not perfect either.

Have fun with it and vote for which series you liked the best from each pairing. We’ll have the next round on Wednesday.
