First Impression: Recovery of an MMO Junkie

I didn’t chose the NEET life, it chose me!

When this new season of anime began, I was looking forward to several series, but this one didn’t pop up on my radar. As a gamer, I felt it my duty to watch this and give my first impression. Recovery of an MMO Junkie is exactly what you think it’s about, someone who is living a life as an MMO (Massively Multiplayer Online Game) player. The name that is often given to them is NEET (Not in Education, Employment, or Training), and they are stereotyped as staying at home all day playing games and not much else. Morioka Moriko is a 30-year-old corporate dropout who just lost her subscription to a game that she used to play. Seeking out a new one, she finds Fruits De Mer and creates a character. One thing that stands out though, is that she makes a male character and doesn’t reveal her gender. This is pretty common in online gaming, so it didn’t surprise me at all. As she plays and discovers more about this new game world, she meets Lily-san, who is also masquerading as the opposite sex. They are not aware of this, and become friends.

I was expecting to see something new in this anime, but so far it just seems like I am watching Konosuba again. I like that the main character doesn’t hide how she is, and acts anti-social when out to buy food. The fact that she is not a male or a teenager makes me want to watch more of it though. Most NEET or otaku that I have seen in anime are often young boys who don’t leave their room and are overweight. This time, we have an adult woman who is just tired of working a corporate job. This makes the show more realistic, and that’s what I want to see. To watch a player-created avatar fight some monsters with a cheesy silver sword has been played out. How that person interacts with the real world, what she feels and says, or how she handles relationships is a side I have not seen yet in an anime. Hopefully this one will continue to explore that side of being a NEET.
