In a world under threat by a vicious enemy, pairs of pilots—usually adolescents—use special abilities to fight back while operation living mecha. One such pilot, Zero Two, is quite unusual: sporting a pair of horns and a reputation as a partner killer, she exasperates her keepers, more interested in tasting people’s skin and going skinny-dipping in oceans than towing the company line. Another pilot, Hiro, seems to be the opposite: talentless, reserved, and defeated. But as Zero Two tells him, the two are the same and may just be a perfect match to fight the common enemy.
Wow…it’s been a while since I watched a series that was so blatant in covering its fundamental flaws with big noise, flashy characters, and cool animation. In that way, it reminds me of Guilty Crown, though the more obvious comparison is Evangelion, to which this series seems to owe everything, including storyline, atmosphere, and plot—the skeleton of this series is absolutely Evangelion, and none of the alterations to it can distract from that. It’s common knowledge that anime as a whole owes so much to NGE, but this is a most obvious example. Unfortunately, the writing doesn’t follow suit—it’s so, so bad. But it was a fun first episode (plus a talking mecha!), so I’m game to see where this series goes, though judging from the quality of writing, my guess is that it won’t be anywhere terribly interesting.

I don’t think it’s a UK property yet but I like the art style. My only comment is that it’s “toeing the line” as in putting your toe on a line to show you are pushing the limit of what you are allowed but not exceeding it. Towing a line is what fishing boats do I believe….

It’s a really engaging series, though I’m meh about the writing and the fan service is sneakily over-the-top.
I hear it is over the top but that’s what Studio Trigger known for. Still, I might hold off on it for now.
