First Impressions: Chio’s School Road

Chio is your typical below-average high school girl who loves playing video games and hates standing out. Her love of video games sometimes gets her in trouble when she stays up all night playing them, then finds herself running late for school… and when the shortcut that will still get her to school on time is blocked by construction, she decides to go full-on Assassin’s Creed and climb onto the rooftops, trying to make it to school without being caught. But even when she wakes up and leaves for school early, her commute encounters a danger of a different sort when she runs into the most popular girl in her class, sending her social anxiety into overdrive…

Chio’s School Road (Japanese title: Chio-chan no Tsuugakuro) is a nice, silly comedic series that takes the simple idea of trying to get to school on time and runs wild with it in different ways. It’s like Nichijou but focused on the school commute and with a healthy dose of video game humor. The first half’s rooftop-hopping adventure even has some more laid-back charm to it with scenes of Chio just enjoying taking the high road (before encountering more comedic situations), and the latter half nails the anxiety of a socially awkward person trying to make small talk a bit too well. That said, it remains to be seen if this show can keep up this kind of fun over one basic concept through its entire run, especially given that these are not shorts but full-length episodes. If it does, though, this will be a great choice for those looking for some silly entertainment.

Chio’s School Road is streaming on Crunchyroll.

  1. I feel like Chio’s personality type would resemble me on rare occasions. 😅
I’m also a gamer too, so I could definitely see myself liking this anime! I’ll check it out when I have the time. 🙂
