First Impression: KAGUYA-SAMA: LOVE IS WAR

Kaguya Shinomiya, Shuchiin Academy’s student council vice president, is heiress to automobile fortune (think Crazy Rich Asians level of rich). Miyuki Shirogane, the student council president, has grades that put him at the top of the school. Rumors abound that the two are dating, but little does the student body know that Shinomiya and Shirogane are playing head games with each other as each tries to get the other to admit to a crush, even while each is unable to admit the same to themselves!

I drop series really fast. Sometimes too fast. Forget the three or four or five episodes test—sometimes I won’t give a show more than 10 minutes. That almost happened here, as I found the initial parts of Kaguya-sama: Love is War too narrative heavy and the two leads too arrogant to like. But each segment (there are three parts to episode one) is better than the last, and I found myself laughing quite a bit by the third one and liking the characters more and more. I think this show is worth trying again next week—which is saying a lot for my itchy trigger-drop-finger.

KAGUYA-SAMA: LOVE IS WAR can be streamed on Crunchyroll.
