First Impression: Isekai Cheat Magician

We’re back with the Summer 2019 Isekai Battle Royale! In the yellow corner is Isekai Cheat Magician and… wait, is that a tag team of two protagonists, one male and one female, getting sent to another world? Looks like they’re childhood friends and ordinary high schoolers who now have to survive in a fantasy world, but what’s this? They actually have incredible magic potential? No way the new world will leave them alone now, especially with their summoner and the summoner’s enemies looking around for them!

Hmm, it doesn’t seem like Isekai Cheat Magician is trying to be anything unique. It’s simply trying to appeal to all the isekai fans out there with a reasonably enjoyable setup episode. It has almost nothing to appeal to non-isekai fans, and that will definitely hurt its chances to win this season’s isekai fight. Sure, the two leads have a pretty good childhood friend dynamic, but they’re the only characters with any significant portrayal at the moment. At least the show lacks the animation or adaptational issues that are currently afflicting the two other isekai shows, but that probably won’t be enough to make up for its bland content, especially as the other shows can at least convince viewers to read the original light novels, something this show does not quite inspire yet. Isekai Cheat Magician is going to need to show it has some meat on its bare-bones skeleton if it wants to make its mark in the Isekai Battle Royale.
