All Mile desires is to live a “normal life,” an existence where she doesn’t stand out and is able to make friends and find happiness. As she prepares to enter magic academy, though, it becomes apparent that despite being granted “normal” powers when being reborn into this world of fantasy and magic, Mile is anything but. And further, she seems to attract abnormal situations and people, including Mavis, a female knight; Reina, a tsundere magic user; and Pauline, a healer with a heart of gold. Where will these relationships lead, and will Mile be able to attain what she wants most?
Didn’t I say to make my abilities average in the next life?! was one of our light novel club reads, and we all gave volume one high marks, though we also wondered what this adaptation would look like. We’ll detail some of those changes soon in another post—for now, I’ll just say that this beginning is quite different from volume one’s, though the changes are there for a reason, resulting in an opening episode that was unexpectedly, well, normal—introduction of the main characters, development of a team, first quest, etc. The info dump was also massive, and a little confusing even for one who’d read all this already (I would have preferred less information now, knowing that more will be given in proceeding episodes). Still, the anime has a charm to it (one different from the light novel, but a charm nonetheless) and the episode was pretty humorous in how aware Mile is of isekai tropes. Here’s hoping the anime took a left turn out the gate because it had to, and will return the right way at some point in the near future.
