First Impression: That Time I Got Reincarnated as a Slime (Season 3)

Rimuru, freshly recognized as a demon lord, dines with his new colleagues before returning home. There he is greeted by various people, including the demon going by the name Diablo. The bulk of the episode is a flashback to all Diablo’s machinations in the kingdom of Falmuth on behalf of Rimuru. There’s a bit of torture and a lot of talking. The upshot is the king will soon be deposed (and probably replaced by someone more favorable to Rimuru and his nation of monsters), and Falmuth will pay a huge amount of reparations for the war they waged last season. And that’s it. That’s the episode. Thrilling, right?

I don’t really feel like there’s much point to this review. If you haven’t seen this show before, go back and try the first season, because it was pretty good and this would be a terrible place to jump in (so many characters, so much backstory!). On the other hand, if you sat through the previous forty-eight episodes, then you probably enjoy this series enough to give this season a shot; you don’t need me to tell you that, and you won’t be put off by this uneventful opening episode. It’s still a funny show, to be sure. That said, it does feel like we’ve drifted away a bit from the silly premise we started with into more serious, cutthroat war-and-politics stuff. This episode is a prime example of that shift toward darker and/or drier subject matter (although the bit where Diablo grows increasingly angry with the human nobles and the rest of his group looks more and more nervous—see image above—was pretty funny). I suppose there’s a third possibility: maybe you got bored somewhere along the way in the previous seasons and dropped the show, in which case…uh, well, this episode was not written to win you back. I plan to keep tuning in for now, though if the show gets much darker, it still might chase me away.

That Time I Got Reincarnated as a Slime (Season 3) is streaming on Crunchyroll.

  1. I’m part of that third group… I watched season 1 and half of season 2 before getting bored with it. Thank you for your review, because it saves me the time of going back and trying to get back into it. It sounds like it lost the charm it had in season 1.
