The adventure continues with the Rooftop Casanova of Ohananomitsu High School, Rentaro Aijou, and his trope-filled baker’s dozen of girlfriends! As a reminder, our boy Rentaro has been blessed (cursed?) with the fate of having 100 soulmates who all fall head over heels for him. The only problem is, if he settles on ONE of them, all the others will die. So Rentaro takes the “logical” approach to this puzzle and dates all the girls that fall for him. The first half of the show involves body-swapping shenanigans the likes of which we haven’t seen since Your Name. The second half involves the rarely seen middle school wing of the school (just how big is this freaking school anyway?) and a “chance” encounter with perpetually “hangry” foodie Kurumi Haraga. You can probably guess how this is going to go. Rentaro will do something that will endear this girl to him, she’ll fall head over heels in love and get welcomed into the flock. This show is nothing if not predictable! Six down, 94 remaining! Cue the shenanigans!

The romp is back, my friends, and it’s even more of a romp than before! This show literally picks up where it left off with all the silly antics and shenanigans from before with more or less the same formula as I mentioned above: our group of girls gets involved with some crazy shenanigans to strengthen their bond with Rentaro and it falls flat on its face. Somewhere along the line, a new girl with some new quirk falls for our kind-hearted dope and joins the team. And of course, we still have the same over-the-top silliness that is this show’s trademark. Our characters literally spend about 3 minutes or so obliterating the 4th wall before the meat of the episode kicks off, even getting in a reference to the body-swapping movie Your Name. Admittedly, I am somewhat disappointed that they didn’t reference Yamada-Kun and the Seven Witches, one of my favorite body-swapping anime, but I digress. As I mentioned in my earlier review, I feel the creators of this show are like “Hey, we’re not here to save lives or anything. We’re not trying to be this deep introspective analysis of the nature of poly relationships or soulmates. We’re just telling this absolute wish-fulfillment story and making it as goofy as possible, while still giving it some heart.” And that’s what I think makes this show…dare I say…fascinating? This show is not about Rentaro scheming to get the girls to love him; he genuinely cares for each girl and is willing to go above and beyond for them, and by extension, the girls freely and genuinely love this dope for his kindness. It’s like Tenchi Muyo, if Tenchi just said “You know what? I like this! Let’s go!” However, please note that this episode does have a bit of fanservice during the body-swapping shenanigans, particularly with the girls swapping bodies with the more…endowed members of the group. It’s an easy joke to make, but as I stated, this show has zero shame.

So where does that leave us with Season 2 of…The 100 Girlfriends Who Really x5 Love You? I can’t even lie guys…I laughed at this one, and a rule I have is that if you make me laugh, you have my attention, at least for a short while. The fact that this show embraces its completely bonkers premise and approaches it with a lot of heart and endearing (if a little trope-filled) characters and tells the audience “Turn your brain off and just have a good time,” makes me respect it in some weird way. If you are interested in watching a high school boy collect girlfriends like Ash Ketchum gets Pokémon, then you should check this one out. If nothing else, you’ll get a good laugh out of just how absurd it is. And considering all that’s going on in the world, in the words of a famous chocolate maker “A little nonsense now and then is cherished by the wisest man.”
