Kurt does the chores for an elite party of adventurers…until they kick him out for not contributing enough. He gets some part-time work doing construction and astounds the supervisor with how much he accomplishes (though Kurt fails to realize this). Next, he takes a mining job from a cute girl named Yulishia. He flirts with her cluelessly, as expected of an anime protagonist. He’s a whiz at mending clothes, finding gemstones, and processing ordinary crystals into magic crystals. The person to whom Yulishia sells the goods is a royal court mage who immediately demands to know who produced such amazing magic crystals. When Yulishia refuses to breach the maker’s privacy, she’s told to tell the person that the kingdom is offering them their own research lab and a noble title. Yulishia gets back to the mining camp where she’d left Kurt…to find he’s built a small house in the time she was gone.
We’re starting off this season with a bog-standard tale of a plucky underdog kicked out of his party for being weak, but who is actually super mega ultra giga beaucoup SSS-rank amazincredible plus 2.0. In particular, Kurt is of the “doesn’t realize how awesome he is because he has warped standards” subtype of protagonist. Have you seen this before? Yes, you have. This show appears to be an adequate but unremarkable take on the premise. I have to wonder whether Kurt will get over his obliviousness to how great he is. It’s supposed to be “funny,” but it’s a shtick that gets old extremely fast; if the show tries to keep milking it for so-called humor, I’m out. I think the other big factor in whether I watch this show will be how the rest of the anime season shapes up. If this proves to be a stacked season with a bunch of shows I want to watch, I suspect this will be one of the first that I drop to make time for the others. For now, though, I’ll plan to give it at least another episode or two.
