Some dude runs through the street, fleeing a monster. A girl pulls him into a bamboo grove to hide, and asks if he’ll rescue her next time? And then he wakes up in Tokyo, having been captured by delinquents. Despite being tied to a pole, the dude—Takeru—puts up a surprisingly good fight. After escaping, he dodges Truck-kun but falls off a cliff. He’s now in someplace called Denji Heian-kyo, meets the girl for the allegedly 2000th time, and has trouble getting along with the locals. Then a sinister black mist breaks a hole in the sky and floods the area. The mist transforms the area and freezes most people, but not Takeru. There’s another monster, but a giant mecha defeats it. Takeru’s crush—Tsukimiya, the girl from before—figures out he probably came from another world. He learns that Denji Heian-kyo is menaced by oni from yet another world, and that onmyoji piloting shikigami defend the city. There’s another oni attack, and Takeru transforms(?????), almost defeating the monster and saving Tsukimiya…almost. He fails and they both die. Booyah, time rewinds to just after he fell off the cliff and landed in this world!

Woof, so to recap, we’ve got isekai, time travel, mecha, and magic, just to start with? And I even skipped over some stuff, like the legendary Abeno (sic) Seimei, in my summary! Well, despite being ridiculously fast-paced, the episode was surprisingly comprehensible, which is not something one can say about all anime. So far, Takeru seems like a Great Value Shonen Protagonist, but the unusual and mysterious combination of other elements mixed through his antics held my interest all the way to the end of the episode. This could just end up being Yet Another Shonen Anime, but for the moment, I’m intrigued enough to want to come back. I recommend giving this one a shot; I think it might turn out to be pretty fun.
