Marie is the oppressed younger daughter of an impoverished noble family. One evening, Marie meets a dashing nobleman and enjoys chatting with him. Now her beautiful older sister Anastasia is set to marry a Count Granado. Unlike their despicable parents, Anastasia actually seems like a kind, caring person who wants to help her sister, trying to encourage her and gifting her nicer clothes than their parents will allow. On her way to get married, though, Anastasia dies in a tragic carriage accident. Their mom promptly starts beating Marie for…failing to die in her sister’s place? Go figure. The parents decide to offer Marie as a replacement for her late sister. But it turns out Count Kyros Granado is the very chap Marie spoke with that one night, and he’d been interested in marrying her, not Anastasia, all along. Of course, Marie has been abused for years and has a hard time to adjusting to these developments.

There’s an evergreen appeal to Cinderella stories. No matter how many of them come along, the next one can still be moving and heartwarming. Those themes of being chosen, raised out of one’s circumstances, and finding comfort after undeserved suffering just resonate with all of us. That holds true here as well. Marie’s plight tugs at one’s heartstrings, and it’s gratifying to see her elevated into a better situation. I don’t expect anything revolutionary here—it is just another Cinderella story—but I do expect I’ll have a lovely time watching Marie heal and grow and find happiness. I recommend this one.
Betrothed to My Sister’s Ex is streaming on Crunchyroll.

I think you’re right on the money with this one. This show feels like it will be in the vein of “My Happy Marriage” but without the mythical elements.
Though I have to wonder why Marie seemingly has a greenish “glow” around her?
