Sixteen-year-old Monica is the youngest of the Seven Sages, the greatest mages in the Kingdom of Ridill. She’s also got crippling social anxiety—indeed, she nearly flunked out of magic school because she would get too nervous to say incantations. To get around that issue, she did something unprecedented: She invented silent spell casting, no incantations required, enabling her to do magic in front of other people without talking. This absurd accomplishment earned her the moniker Silent Witch and elevation to the Seven Sages. One day, her fellow sage Louis stops by her mountain cabin and badgers her into accepting a mission: She must secretly serve as bodyguard for Prince Felix at his boarding school. Monica is more than strong enough for the job, so her extreme shyness might be a greater challenge for her than any assassin.

That was excellent. The premise is interesting, Monica’s adorable, the magic looks awesome, the backgrounds were pretty, and the soundtrack was strong. This is the whole package. It’s the most impressive premiere I’ve seen so far this season. I’m not as diligent a follower of the series as some of my colleagues, but I have read the first couple light novels (they’re great, FYI), so I was very much looking forward to this adaptation, and this episode did not disappoint! Don’t miss this one. I think it’s going to be fantastic, one of the best of the summer.
