First Impression: Scooped Up by an S-Rank Adventurer!

We open with Lloyd getting kicked out of his party, then get what seems like a flashback(?) to some past event that involved him. Then we get a montage of young Lloyd growing up and learning magic from his mentor. Eventually he tires of her somewhat draconian methods and sets out for the city on his own. Fast forward and he’s become an adventurer in the party of the hero Allen. We get more hints about Mentor Lady’s past and Lloyd’s connection to it. We also see Lloyd contributing to the hero’s party, then getting cast out and looking for work. The episode ends with someone desperate to recruit a white mage finding him.

Mystery is the main appeal here, and it’s mostly tied to Lloyd’s mentor. Who is she? What did she mean by that cryptic comment about his “potential to be a chosen one”? Why is she so obsessed with making sure Lloyd doesn’t become overconfident? And what will the people in Lloyd’s new party be like? At this point, I think “underappreciated support role banished from the hero’s party” is getting to be its own genre. Just the other day we got Welcome to the Outcast’s Restaurant! and now we get this show with the same initial premise. If I had to pick just one show for you to watch this season, I’d probably say try Outcast’s Restaurant first, because its protag Dennis had a more appealing personality. But I also think this show looks pretty decent and plan to come back for at least another episode or two. It does look like the two shows are set to go in pretty different directions, even if they start from the same basic place.

Scooped Up by an S-Rank Adventurer! is streaming on Crunchyroll.

  1. Eh, I just watched EP 1 right now and wanted to see who reviewed it. For me, this one is trash. The plot jumps here and there, there’s no explanation to what’s going on except a quick like 10 seconds of what happened to the party and Lloyd in the past. I would have liked a bit more depth with the characters. This one get a 1 out of 5 for me, it’s meh…..I will try EP 2 but just to see if it can redeem itself -_-
