The Anime Artisan: Jiji and the Evil Eye

Charity case, taking care of an entity born from a pitiful place, seeking mercy, yet doing harm. Reminds me of people who fall into relationships that make said person unrecognizable. Warping the kind spirit of the individual into an extension of the manipulator’s bad deeds and insecurities.

Like Jiji, selflessly seeing an opportunity to help a broken individual, has in turn selfishly allowed his support system, his friends, to carry the brunt of that weight, becoming near casualties to a “good deed.” What is the cost of holding on? Were another’s unfortunate circumstances ever your burden to shoulder? At what point in being the shoulder to cry on, did you realize your soft, fuzziness was fodder for the fire?

Sometimes our loving hearts can be taken advantage of, without even realizing it. Playing the role of personal savior was never our role to fill. I think of the saying, “misery likes company,” and how true that is, falling to a lowly place as to appear as an act of love until all at once, crippled into corruption.

(On the other hand, the Evil Eye design is beautiful!! Jiji’s transformation and action sequences are absolutely otherworldly!)
