Hmm…does this fanart indicate that Serie was responsible for burning down Frieren’s village and the deaths of her kin? I hope that’s not a spoiler from the series (I don’t think it is). Regardless, these are lovely illustrations; check out the cool sliding feature below, through which you can really compare the companion pieces!
Edit: As our very own Facebook lead and manga reviewer, WacOtaku, notes in the comments, that second illustration is very likely a flashback to Frieren when she was young. And now it all makes sense! And it’s all the more sorrowful!

Nothing in the manga has ever implied that Serie was connected to the destruction of Frieren’s village. This pair of illustrations is probably referring to Flamme’s comment about she and Serie were mages meant for an age of war, while Frieren was the sort of mage who would be able to find her true purpose in an age of peace.
Ohh! That makes sense!
And not to be that guy, but the more I look at it, are we 100% the person in the second illustration is Serie and not also Frieren? The original X post only included a Frieren hashtag, and Frieren is shown wearing a sundress and having her hair down in some of her flashback scenes. With the title of this pair of illustrations being “Reminisce”, it may be an illustration of Frieren remembering the night her village was attacked.
Yep, I think you’re right. I’m going to have to revise this…
