First Impression: Mechanical Marie

Sometimes you gotta do what you gotta do, even if it means pretending to be a robot for a rich heir who absolutely hates people who lie? Marie decides to take this risk in order to help pay off her parents’ debts. After all, being a strong MMA fighter and not showing any emotion has its advantages! She just needs to keep Arther safe from anyone who would target or take him out as heir, but what she isn’t prepared for is just how differently he acts around only her. Is she really going to be able to keep up this charade to protect him when he acts so cute every time it’s just the two of them?!

Once again, another shoujo anime that has left my shoujo-loving heart overly giddy, because what a wonderful first episode this is! The manga was one of my most anticipated releases this year, and I confess I had high expectations when watching this episode, as the shenanigans that ensued in the manga left me giggling. The anime was perfect in every way, leaving me laughing, smiling, and having a wonderful time! However, the cherry on top was finding out two voice actors from Twisted Wonderland, a mobile game I play every day, were also voicing two characters in the anime! Please excuse me while I squeal because that made my morning watching this episode! Usually, I just focus on the story aspect of an anime, but hearing Haurki Ishiya (Arthur) and Yuuichirou Umehara (Roy) made the experience all the better! I also thought the animation was very, very good! The action scenes were flawless, the humor was on point with the wide range of expressions Arthur and Marie make, and the overall direction in capturing the manga was everything I hoped it would be! We even had those wonderful shoujo sparkles at just the right moments! The anime brings a fresh level of enjoyment to the series because hearing Arthur’s voice and seeing how his expressions change with his fondness for Marie hits in an even more satisfying way than in the manga! (One could even say that seeing a young man have more fondness for a supposed robot hits differently because he really doesn’t seem to like humans. Ha!) The anime only strengthens my personal love for the story, which is fun and engaging! And if you haven’t read the manga, I recommend this if you want a stoic heroine who really is caring (even if her face doesn’t show it), and a hero who may seem delulu (and sometimes scary) but is actually considerate, in an engaging story that has a good dose of humor and action! This is another anime I’m adding to my weekly lineup because I need to see more robot shenanigans and cute, blushy Arthur moments, despite the fact that I don’t know how I’m going to have the time to watch all these anime!

Mechanical Marie is streaming on Crunchyroll.
