First Impression: A Misanthrope Teaches a Class for Demi-Humans

After something(?) caused Rei to quit his teaching job and spend a couple of years as a misanthropic NEET, he applies for a teaching job at an all-girls high school seeking someone with “human qualities” who is “dedicated to their students.” He follows a somewhat mysterious path to the school and meets his slightly odd fellow teachers. Then the principal starts talking about disguising himself with magic, before dropping the bombshell that the school’s students aren’t human, though they aspire to become so. Rei claims to hate humans, but maybe teaching demi-humans will work out…

I wasn’t sure what to expect with this one, since the premise has the potential to devolve into squicky teacher-student romance scenarios, after all. This opening episode seems to firmly reject that possibility, however, which is encouraging. The show reminded me a bit of Interviews with Monster Girls, which was quite a fun series. I enjoyed all the eccentric characters, as well as Rei’s reactions to the various mysterious phenomena (he’s more fazed by the principal’s change in appearance than anything else, it seems). And naturally, I’m curious about why Rei is so bitter toward humans, and how this new experience might change his perspective. Despite my initial misgivings about where the series may go, I have to admit this was a pretty enjoyable opening episode. I’ll definitely give the show a chance.
