First Impression: Wistoria: Wand & Sword Season 2

At Rigarden Magical Academy, Will Serfort (a master swordsman unable to actually do proper magic) continues his studies and scores perfectly on his graduation exams. We’re also reintroduced to his friends and various other characters. Will’s goal is to catch up to his childhood friend Elfaria, who is a member of the supreme council of mages, the Magia Vander. The first step is graduating and getting into the tower where the big-time mages are. Unfortunately, Will’s archnemesis professor Edward hits him with a final exam question about using magic tailored specifically so Will can’t answer it. Thanks to that, Will fails and is heartbroken. Meanwhile, it’s New Year’s Eve, and everyone is celebrating the Terminalia festival, where the Magia Vander reinforces the great barrier in the sky that holds off an old enemy known as the Celestial Host. They’ve been doing this for five hundred years, so I’m sure nothing will go wrong…

Interesting. First, let’s get the usual disclaimer out of the way: This is the second season of an anime, so if you’re interested, start with the first one. Now, that said, the first season had a students-at-magic-school premise, and with this episode seemingly featuring graduation exams, I’m not sure if the school angle will continue to be a thing or if the story is gearing up for some sort of shift. The episode’s ending certainly suggests that the status quo may be changing. I enjoyed the characters, action, and music of the first season, so I’m definitely eager to see where things go from here. I think this one is worth checking out if you missed it the first time around.

Wistoria: Wand & Sword is streaming on Crunchyroll.
