Natsuyuki Rendezvous: Treasure in a Field of Flowers

I’m one of those people who after watching artsy movies or films otherwise critically acclaimed, stands back and says, “That was technically a great film, but I really didn’t enjoy it.”

I thought I would feel the same this season regarding Natsuyuki Rendezvous – all signs pointed to the show being excellent, but the series description and snapshots from it didn’t appeal to me.  So, I’m surprised that, at least two episodes in, I’m genuinely enjoying it.

One reason I’m liking the show is because of the intense level of love demonstrated within, particularly between Rokka and her deceased husband.  Ryusuke, too, seems to truly love with her (though it’s hard to distinguish whether it’s love or infatuation; I’m not clear at this point why he “loves” her so much).

There’s a LOT of love in this love triangle (Art by zagi)

Though we don’t know much of Ryusuke’s background at this point, and though he doesn’t seem to be the type to really worry much about anything, he did indeed give up quite a bit to be around Rokka.  He gave up time, spendingmonths working at Rokka’s shop to get closer to her.  He gave up any work ambitions he had to do the same.  And he gave up the chance at dating other girls.  This last point shouldn’t be gleaned over – even Rokka mentions that Ryusuke is probably be popular with the ladies.

So why does Ryusuke give up so much?  His feelings and actions bring to mind one of Jesus’ shorter parables:

The kingdom of heaven is like treasure hidden in a field. When a man found it, he hid it again, and then in his joy went and sold all he had and bought that field.

– Matthew 13:44

Ryusuke has found his great treasure and because he values her so much, he easily lets go of everything he had for a chance to gain her.  Even if I’m unsure of what Ryusuke particularly sees in Rokka, it’s evident that she has moved him to the point that he’s displayed love in a pretty profound way.  He’s sacrificed to gain what’s more important to him than anything.

That’s quite an admirable action from one who we might call a slacker.

What about you?  Do you have that kind of love in your own life?  If you’re a Christian, do you have that kind of love for Jesus?

  1. When I read through some of the opinions on the blogosphere about the summer anime, this one was the one that struck me as most interesting. I’ll definitely be checking it out.
