First Impression: THE NEW GATE

Shin is strong player who saved thousands of players who were locked in a realistic VR MMORPG called The New Gate. But after he thought he finished the game, a surprise was waiting for him. Before he has the chance to leave the game, he seems to skip 500 years into the future of that world. He feels a bit lost here, so the most logical thing to do seems to be to go the place where his home used to be. He finds out the building is still there, but the person he was looking for, Schnee, is not there. Instead, he meets her servant Tiera. She is being bothered by a group of men, who sic a huge beast on her as well. Thankfully, Shin is there to protect this unfortunate lady. As if that wasn’t enough, he also lifts the curse she was under. To show her gratitude, she gives him a powerful letter of introduction, which turns out to be one of the most powerful items anyone can possess in that society. Where will Shin’s adventure in this new world take him?

I found this first episode to be completely uninspired. Admittedly, I’m not the biggest fan of the Isekai genre in general, but I do like adventure anime. Shin’s adventure doesn’t look very interesting to me, though, and I got the feeling that the staff didn’t even try to get us interested in it. We learn nothing about Shin that makes him stand out from any other Isekai protagonist, and his bland character design doesn’t help there either. The premise is not very original too, so what we’re left with is some simple entertainment only for the uncritical Isekai enjoyer. I also had a problem with how the female characters are depicted. There is a moment when Shin is staring at Tiera’s breasts, and that fact isn’t even addressed as the episode goes on. This little scene implies that objectifying her is completely normal and ok, and probably sets the tone for Shin’s interactions with women to follow. In my opinion, there isn’t really anything here to make this series worth it, especially because there are so many better Isekai to choose from. I won’t be continuing this one.

THE NEW GATE is streaming on Crunchyroll.
