First Impression: The Ancient Magus’ Bride

I am not often interested in anime that is heavy on magic use, for the reason that it can get into satanic rituals and symbols which I stay away from. The cover of this show seemed different, and inviting, so I gave it a try. The first episode doesn’t explain much, as you are thrown into the life of Chise, who is living in a magical home. A messenger bird arrives with tons of books for her to study, sent by Angelica who seems to be a friend, on magic. Her teacher, Elias, wears some animal skull on his head (is that his real head, or a mask?) explains that they may be too difficult, but that it’s time he starts showing her how to use magic. Chise has been studying the art, but hasn’t practiced it yet. She’s able to see into the spirit world, which has caused her trauma and bullying during her childhood. This is all shown in a flashback around the end of the episode.

The animation looks pretty good, with some nice scenes that make everything look very real. Even the water pouring into a cup, to the city lights in the beginning look sharp. I was a little confused as to what was going on as the anime doesn’t explain much of what is going on. Even the names of some characters aren’t given or they are just there for a couple scenes, which felt rushed. The episode reminded me of Spirited Away, and I wonder if the anime pulls references from there. I will watch a few more episodes, but I hope they explain what exactly is going on since understanding a plot is important for me, personally. I will drop a show if I cannot comprehend the situations the characters are placed in.

  1. The OVAs for this are really extras, not starting where the manga does and so not giving any explanations in order. Weren’t those attached to manga volumes in the first place, meaning that yes you have read the manga if you bought any of those?

    So I would recommend reading up first. I’ve only read some of the manga, but it’s an atmospheric piece which focuses on character interactions/development and world exploration. If any of the anime eps struck your fancy I feel you’ll like the manga too. There is a very strong focus on ancient magic throughout the entire work, but nothing that struck me as offensive towards a Christian mindset. However, I hardly ever find magic portrayals disturbing in general, so your mileage may vary.

      Yeah the magic is tame in this anime as its used in fantasy and to awe the watcher but not in a demonic sense. Anyways, looking forward to continuing it unless it stays boring….then drop
