First Impression: The Quintessential Quintuplets

Uesugi Fuutarou has a problem. No, it’s not that he’s frugal, or that he doesn’t have any friends, or that the whole student body looks upon him with disdain—none of those things bother him. The problem is that his family needs money, and just when he’s been given an opportunity to tutor a family for a substantial salary, Uesugi discovers that he’s insulted the girl he’s meant to tutor. But that’s not the worst of it—he’s about to discover that his problem is actually five times bigger than that!

So…this show has all the potential to be flat and uninspiring. The love story angle feels like Love Hina or one of any number of harem series, while the comedy is based on archetypes—five girls with different personalities and a boy who is as typical as protagonists get these days, with his prideful, solitary personality. But episode one did something very interesting—it took some of those beloved elements and went to town on them. This is no lazy show—the animation was thoughtful and energetic, a treat for the eyes, as all sorts of interesting styles were thrown in at almost a mile a minute. And the show, at least thus far, refuses to rest upon fanservice laurels, keeping it as minimal as you could probably hope for from a series featuring five large-busted young ladies. Plus, our protagonists are compelling, as cookie-cutter as they are. There’s a ton of potential here, and I’ll be continuing on to see if it can cash in on the surprisingly strong opening episode.
