Dragon Quest: The Adventure of Dai is based off a popular videogame series of RPGs by the same name. As a gamer, I was looking forward to watching it since I have played a few Dragon Quest games. The anime starts off by explaining how there was a hero who defeated the dark lord (aka, major bad guy) and freed the monsters of the world from his control. The world was at peace, for now.
Dai, the main protagonist, lives on an island full of monsters that are friendly and is trained by a monster named Grandpa Brass to become a mage, like him. Dai wants to be a hero instead, but continues along with his training. A group of fake heroes arrives at the island, proclaiming that they are there to help the monsters. Their actual agenda is to steal a rare monster, a golden slime, that is Dai’s friend, Gomechan.
This band of thieves start attacking the monsters, steal Gomechan, and bring it back to their king who is on their ship. Dai picks himself up after being defeated, takes a group of monsters with him and goes on the offensive. After beating back the deceptive group, their slimy friend is rescued and Dai is honored with the Crown of Champions by the king. The episode ends with Dai meeting a princess, who came to ask him for help.
I enjoyed this one, especially the animation which was originally done by Akira Toriyama (Dragonball, Chrono Trigger, etc) and it had that RPG feel to it. This is also a remake of an older anime from the late 1980s-early 1990s with added 3D scenes here and there. I look forward to watching more, as I’m not familiar with the original story.
