It’s sakura season, love is in the air, and…the hero and villainess are on a date?! Fudo is Red Gelato, field leader of the hero group Freezing Sentai Gelato 5. Desumi is the Reaper Princess, an elite warrior fighting for the villainous Secret Society Gecko. And here they are discussing whether to try holding hands for the first time. Then another Power Ranger Gelato crashes the party, and to keep up appearances Fudo and Desumi immediately start “fighting.” From that opening, most of the episode is a flashback to how Fudo and Desumi started dating. They met in battle, Fudo was smitten with her, and after some unwitting encouragement from his boss Professor Big Gelato, he asks Desumi to be his girlfriend. With the flashback over, another scene of the “date” in the present serves to bookend the episode.
Huh. Looks like tokusatsu romcom wasn’t on my Spring 2022 Anime bingo card. This episode was mostly quite entertaining. I say “mostly” because I thought the visuals were a little wonky, though I can’t quite put my finger on why. Well, that and one other issue: does Desumi really need to wear such a skimpy outfit, and does the camera really need to linger on her attire (or lack thereof) so much? Like, I get that female characters (hero and villain alike) of the superhero genre have a long history of dressing rather lightly…but I still found it kind of off-putting, like the episode kept inviting me to leer at her or something. If it just dials back the fanservicey aspect, this could be a cute, funny show, but I’m not sure I’ll stick around to find out.

It looks like a fun time and I’ll be checking it out. The series is based on a manga, so they couldn’t exactly change the female lead’s design, although I hope they tone down the ecchiness.
sounds interesting, maybe they will focus more on the story rather than the FL clothes in later episodes.
