First Impression: A Condition Called Love

Witnessing a horrible breakup while getting a special treat at a local café wasn’t how Hotaru imagined her day, but that’s exactly what happens! Even when Hotaru heads home after a lovely time with her friend, she thinks about the breakup she saw and wonders how someone who was once in love could say such nasty things. As she’s walking home, to her surprise, Hotaru runs into the very guy who was broken up with: Hananoi! She lends him her umbrella in the falling snow and thinks nothing more of it, until the next morning when he shows up at her class asking if she’ll be his girlfriend! Hotaru may not have felt she could ever fall in love, but Hananoi is willing to help her see that she can…and maybe even with him!

My manga-reading heart is so so so happy! It is always a wonderful thing when one of your favorite manga is captured beautifully in anime and that is exactly what has happened here with A Condition Called Love! While I will admit that things seemed a little too fast-paced at first, in the sense that I felt the scenes jumped around a little more quickly than I preferred, the rest of the adaptation impressed me! I was most nervous about Hotaru’s internal dialogue and whether it would be conveyed well. In the manga Hotaru internally asks a lot of questions and thinks deeply about those questions, and we see this in the very opening scene of the anime as she is chatting with her best friend. I felt that this part of her character was represented fantastically here in the anime and that we could see how her struggle is a very personal one that many may not realize, but we the viewers know. Meanwhile, Hananoi looked incredibly dashing and the animators made sure that he was often shown with his sweet smile! Ha! I loved it and I’m already looking forward to seeing him grow as a character! For those not familiar with the manga, I promise he grows a lot and the “warning bells” that may be ringing now won’t be later! Please stick around and keep watching! With the ending of 7th Time Loop, which was my favorite anime of last season, A Condition Called Love has already begun to fill the anime void in my heart and has me looking forward to tuning in again next week! Before then though, I plan to go look up the full songs of both the opening and closing because while both songs may not be “loud” and have you wanting to dance, they fit the vibe of this manga so perfectly that I want to listen to them over and over again!

A Condition Called Love is streaming on Crunchyroll.
