Some of the shiniest parts of The Apothecary Diaries are when Maomao, who dresses and looks as frumpy as possible to protect herself, shows her extraordinary beauty. The second illustration, though, reminds of that her interests lie far more with pharmaceuticals and experimentation than make-up and beauty.
