First Impression: The Ossan Newbie Adventurer, Trained to Death by the Most Powerful Party, Became Invincible

Rick Gladiator is a bit of a late bloomer when it comes to adventuring, but as the title suggests, that doesn’t mean he’s an insignificant fighter. He has been trained for two years by the most powerful party, and they didn’t go easy on him either. The fact that he survived the training says enough about his power, but on top of that he’s considered a proper member of their party. So when he participates in the test as an F-rank adventurer, he isn’t challenged by its demands at all. He pulls a classic Vegeta move as he completely destroys the punching bag and the wall behind it. With this, he entirely steals the spotlight, much to the chagrin of some of the nobles who are participating. One of them, a B-rank adventurer, challenges him to a duel to make him answer for his insolence. Our F-rank protagonist respects the difference in rank between them to such an extent that he’s utterly intimidated. But is all that really necessary with such hardcore training under his belt?

I thought the animation, music, and sound effects were all up to standard. The voice acting was decent as well. From the goofy opening I expected that the comedy wouldn’t be that good, but it wasn’t as bad as I expected. The biggest problem this anime suffers from, though, is a lack of originality. Nothing we see in this episode really sets the anime apart from other fantasy stories with overpowered protagonists. This might not have to be an issue for fans of the genre, because overall the first episode is still kind of entertaining. The question is how long this anime will stay interesting when it has a basic plot like this. If you had to ask me, I wouldn’t say there is a lot of potential for an anime like this. When the plot is so unoriginal, the first episode has to be exceptionally good for viewers to stay interested. The top comment on Crunchyroll reminds viewers to apply the 3 episode rule, but personally I think the first episode should do something to hook the viewer, and I didn’t really see that here. Because of that, I won’t be continuing this anime.

The Ossan Newbie Adventurer, Trained to Death by the Most Powerful Party, Became Invincible is streaming on Crunchyroll.

  1. And it’s another in the line anime series writing a sentence for a title. I hope some day we go back to interesting SHORT titles instead of the 10 second elevator pitch as the title.
