First Impression: Wistoria: Wand and Sword

Will Serfort is a student at Magical Academy Rigarden. What sets him apart from his classmates, is his complete incompetence when it comes to any form of magic. Everyone around him seems to think he’s one of the most unlikely students to become a Magia Vandar, a title that only the strongest of mages can receive. But a few people see something special in him. His physical power, instincts, and skill as a swordsman are unparalleled. Besides that, he also has heart, which is why Colette, his classmate, defends him against his bullies. Will uses his strength to defeat monsters in high-level dungeons, which grants him just enough credits to get by. In the second half of the episode, one of the teachers who likes him gives him the location of a strong monster on the 6th floor. But the bully gets there first, intending to kill the monster and take the credits for himself. Yet the monster in question seems to be a bit stronger than he expected. Is Will going to save him, or will he run away? Why should he help someone who tormented him so much?

The art style of this anime grabbed my interest right away. I think it has a charm to it, which is also true for the animation, even though I felt it was a bit sloppy at the beginning of the episode. It definitely gets a lot better as the episode goes on, so if you’re interested in this anime, I recommend sticking around for the second half. The action gets really good and is accompanied by a great soundtrack. In terms of the story, my expectations weren’t very high because I anticipated it would be like any other “stronk mc” anime. And at least in this first episode, the plot itself is not necessarily very special, but the great execution makes up for it. Generally, I’m not an action shounen fan, but I found myself rooting for the main character—he’s pretty likable. For me, the overall experience of the first episode was very positive, and I wouldn’t mind seeing more of this anime.

Wistoria: Wand and Sword is streaming on Crunchyroll.
