First Impression: The Red Ranger Becomes an Adventurer in Another World

Tougo Asagaki, better known as Red Ranger, is a hero who died an honorable death fighting for love and friendship. But death isn’t the end for him, because he gets a second chance in a new world. Unlike most protagonists in this situation, he uses the exact same abilities he had in his own world, even though they don’t match the magic system of the rest of the new world. After six months of adventuring, he tries to get approved for a quest from Yidhra Arvoln. When she witnesses his unusual power, she considers adventuring together with him to learn more about his strange abilities. Will Tougo help Yidhra fulfill her dream, and will Yidhra find a way to send him back to his own world?

I really wanted to dislike this anime for multiple reasons. To begin with, the comedy is very cheesy. It mostly consists of Tougo using his Tokusatu-style abilities, to which Yidhra reacts repeatedly in a bewildered and slightly annoyed fashion. On top of that, I’m not a fan of the sexualized female character design or the use of CG animation. However, even though the anime isn’t really that funny in my opinion, the chemistry between Tougo and Yidhra is kind of endearing. Tougo has an undying optimism that reminds me of Shu from Now and Then, Here and There, and his preserved abilities from his previous world give him some uniqueness as an isekai protagonist. Yidhra is a bit of a standard tsundere character, but she treats Tougo with respect despite all his silliness. So in defiance of my initial expectations, I think this one is worth giving a shot if the premise interests you. I wouldn’t be surprised if the next few episodes justify my initial negative bias, but this first episode makes me curious to see if the second episode can hold its own as well.

The Red Ranger Becomes an Adventurer in Another World is streaming on Crunchyroll.

  1. After watching the first couple episodes, I would say what you see in the first episode is what you get for the following ones. The team grows to four people before they start on their adventure but the comedy styling remains the same, even as their objective becomes broader. For me though, the comedy kind of lost it luster after the first few episodes and just got a little too cheesy (everyone realizes his power badges are band-aids right?), and the sexualized female costume design just annoyed me (like seriously, do they not have clothes in adult women’s sizes?). Overall a nice departure of the isekai genre mixing it with the power ranger formula, but the mix just didn’t work for me and still traded on a tired trope or two.

  2. Ah that’s unfortunate. Thanks for your thoughts on the next few episodes. From what you said it doesn’t sound worth continuing sadly!
