First Impression: mono

Satsuki starts high school and joins the photography club. She greatly admires her senpai, the club president, but after a fun year, senpai graduates, leaving Satsuki feeling rather deflated. Friend and fellow club member An browbeats Satsuki into pulling herself together. Satsuki buys a camera from a woman named Haruno who lives nearby. The girls go over to pick it up, one thing leads to another, and then they’re mounting An’s camera on a cat’s head. The interactions between the girls and Haruno set the stage for Haruno to reveal she’s a mangaka who just happens to have recently been commissioned to draw a manga about high school girls. She recruits her new acquaintances as reference material. They hop in Haruno’s car and—following some wild driving that makes Mr. Toad of Toad Hall look like a pace car at the Indy 500—arrive at a museum with a good view of the city. They capture a time lapse of the sunset and take panoramic shots of the illuminated cityscape.

I’ve seen anime about high school girls in clubs. I’ve seen anime about mangaka. This is shaping up to be some sort of weird fusion of those genres. And I am totally on board with it! Unlike Green Eggs and Ham: The Anime, I thought this was genuinely cute and charming and silly in equal measures. As added bonuses, the characters never got on my nerves or felt like they were yelling at me, and the episode had some really pretty visuals. I think this show has a lot of potential, and I definitely recommend giving it a shot. It’s one of the more promising premieres I’ve watched this season.

mono is streaming on Crunchyroll.

  1. Ooo, thanks for the heads up! I haven’t heard a lot about this anime, and I kind of over looked it for my Spring Watch List, but I think I’ll be picking this one up. It sounds really fun!
