The birdhouse is full! With Hiro joining Nagi, Erika, and Sachi after leaving her own home to avoid an arranged marriage (yes, another one), the household has grown to house four teenagers. It’s a lot of fun—movie nights, scary games, girl talk—but it’s also messy, and in an already really messy home. Hiro is the first to say she’ll step up and help Nagi with chores, but her method for cooking is…a little slow. The other girls aren’t very helpful either. And yet, Nagi seems to be really happy. But will he stay that way once he decides on his future? And how will the appearance of someone totally new shake up this nest?

A Couple of Cuckoos is back, and with a new girl! But it’s just as boring as ever! No, really, has there ever been a less memorable anime romcom? Wait, don’t answer that—I know anime is absolutely replete with mid-romcoms. But let me make the case for this one being the middest of them all. A Couple of Cuckoos has virtually no structure—it just throws tropes into the mix, one after another. In this episode, that means a new girl, guy-girl living arrangements, bad cooks, arranged marriages, and more. It’s supposed to generate doki-doki moments and laughs; admittedly, there are some humorous moments, but the romance is pretty much relegated to fanservice-y shots of characters who are mostly obnoxious. When the show settles into moments of extended dialogue, like Sachi’s conversation with Nagi at the end of the episode, it leads to inane, boring blabber. The two talk about marriage, and princes on white horses, and “I might get married, too”, and blah blah blah. I felt several IQ points stupider for paying attention to the entire thing. And as that scene ended and the episode concluded by revealing a bit more of the new girl, Ai, I suddenly remembered why I’d forgotten that I had watched all 24 episodes of season one: This show just isn’t worth remembering.
At least I appreciate the fun the animators are having with this series; the production quality is pretty nice!
