Yuu Ayase is the son of a legendary actress, so it makes sense he goes to Saika Academy, a school attended by highly talented students. Unfortunately for our dear protagonist, there doesn’t seem to be a single thing he excels at, not even acting. His painfully apparent ineptitude earns the disdain of the school’s most popular trio: the Mikadono Sisters. Each of the sisters is a prodigy in her own domain, which has taught them to be impatient and unforgiving when faced with mediocrity, which they think Yuu is the embodiment of. This is a painful moment for Yuu, but he quickly recovers his composure and finishes the day by visiting his new home. A mysterious benefactor has taken him in following his mother’s death. When Yuu opens the door, he’s surprised to find out the house is a huge mansion. His shock grows further when he realizes this is the residence of the Mikadono Sisters. The girls have no choice but to accept him as their new housemate. However, they’re hell-bent on staying as distant from Yuu as they possibly can.
From the title and the first few minutes, I didn’t think I’d like this anime. We have an incompetent and unimposing protagonist who ends up in a “lucky” situation where he lives with three beautiful and popular girls. This is not usually the type of set up I’m interested in, but this anime had more charm than I expected. The flashback scenes with his late mother were done tactfully and with nuance. She had a wish for Yuu to have a happy family life, and I hope the anime will be going in that direction instead of leaning too much into the harem side, especially because the main character doesn’t seem fit for that direction. The comedy is not for everyone, but I thought it was at least endearing most of the time. The characters are fun, and getting to know them promises for some entertaining episodes ahead. Beyond that, I wonder if the story will stay engaging, but so far so good. If you’re a fan of the romcom genre, I recommend giving this one a shot. I’m not sure if I’ll be following this anime for the rest of the season, but I might take a look at the next few episodes to see if they hold up.
