First Impression: A Wild Last Boss Appeared!

In the MMORPG Exgate Online, one of the game’s top players, Lufas, managed to conquer all of the in-game nations and coordinated an in-game war, culminating in other top players, the “Heroes,” defeating her in a climactic PvP battle. Afterwards, the guy who plays as Lufas gets a mysterious invite, resulting in him incarnating into the game world as his character, two hundred years after her last battle. Despite the genderbending awkwardness, Lufas is excited to explore the world that she had previously known as a game. She reunites with Dina, an NPC designated as her advisor, and learns that three Heroes of long-lived races are still out there, and so are the “twelve heavenly stars,” legendary monsters that Lufas had caught and trained. Lufas decides to find her monsters while checking on the situation with the Heroes, but first, she must make some money through some adventuring quests.

The light novel author was apparently heavily inspired by Pokémon for this story, so apologies in advance for all the references in my review.

While I had caught the first volume of the light novel of A Wild Last Boss Appeared! a long time ago, I remember not being quite interested enough in it to train it up to the later volumes, and while the anime adaptation isn’t Magikarp levels of bad, it still does not stand out among all of the other Game/Isekai-type anime available. The show’s Visual stat is passable at best, and features a surprisingly high level of gore (albeit mainly from orcs) for what appears not to be a Dark-type show. The Story stat is also not particularly high right now, though perhaps later on it can evolve to explore the dynamics of the Heroes in the post-war era and how Lufas interacts with them. While Lufas herself can be an amusing character with the uncontrollable Ability of her words coming out in the tone of an evil overlord, the whole genderbending aspect is an early-show throwaway joke that is quickly forgotten. Overall, the show is only for those who want to fill their watchlist full of game/isekai-type shows. While I might hear about this show taking the story in more interesting directions in later episodes, for me at this moment, A Wild Last Boss Appeared! is just going to be deposited into the PC.

A Wild Last Boss Appeared can be caught on Crunchyroll.
