First Impression: Dad Is a Hero, Mom Is a Spirit, I’m a Reincarnator

Rovel is a powerful spirit wizard called upon by the kingdom to fend off a monster invasion. In a last-ditch effort to defeat the monsters, he uses up all his power together with his spirit companion to save the kingdom and be lauded as a hero. However, the spirit in question, the Spirit Queen Origin, will not let him die and takes him away to the spirit world. There, she restores his strength, and the two of them fall in love and get married. They have a daughter, Ellen, who is actually reincarnated from a Japanese scientist and thus can combine her spirit powers with the power of SCIENCE. Due to his marriage turning him into a half-spirit, Rovel spends the better part of a decade learning to control his powers, before finally returning to the human world. That said, he has no desire to deal with the bothers of his position as a hero, but Ellen prods him into at least checking back in with his family. To make matters worse, Rovel’s former fiancée, Princess Agiel, an extravagant and obsessive woman, has married his brother and has started to drain the family’s finances, so Rovel makes preparations for a confrontation with her.

Being a reincarnator also allows Ellen to easily wrap her doting father around her finger.

There are some shows where the title tells you everything you need to know about that show. This definitely feels like one of those shows, especially since the first episode doesn’t tell you much more. We do get to see the personalities of the three central characters, from the somewhat cowardly hero Rovel to the loving spirit Origin to the main character, the cute and cheeky Ellen. The episode mainly just shows off what a loving family they are, with the key moment being a wedding in the human world. Beyond that, the first major conflict of the show is set up, and that’s it for the episode. We don’t get to see Ellen use her “cheat skill” of the power of SCIENCE for anything other than making some rings, so we don’t know how she uses her powers for conflict resolution. The opening suggests Ellen will be romanced by various boys, none of whom are anywhere to be seen in the episode itself. The biggest thing this show has going for it is the novelty of a fantasy series focused on the full nuclear family, with mom, dad, and child all being major characters of the story, but it remains to be seen if future episodes will take advantage of this setup. Without much else to work with, this feels like one of those shows where I have to see what people say about future episodes to decide if I continue with it.
