Film Review: The Dangers in My Heart: The Movie

It’s concert time for the band Primary Color! Lead guitarist and vocalist Kana Ichikawa is about to belt out a brand-new song called “To Be Continued”.  What’s so special about this song? Well, it was co-written by her little brother, the cringe lord, love-struck dork, Kyotaro Ichikawa, and is based on his feelings about his newly acquired girlfriend, the adorable extrovert Anna Yamada. Once the object of his twisted murder fantasies (bless his heart), Kyotaro soon comes to realize that the feelings he has for Anna are more along the lines of romance, and as it turns out, Anna feels the same way…minus the murder thing, thankfully. Through many days of growth, realizations, and development, Kyotaro and Anna eventually come to realize that they do, in fact, like each other, and after a tearful confession, begin their relationship. However, even with this new found love, our little introverted bro is feeling some kind of way about having his feelings put out there for all to hear, and he contemplates what exactly brought him to this point—from being an anti-social, mentally questionable, emotionally closed off nihilist, to being a more sociable, mature, vulnerable dork, like most middle schoolers his age. How in the world did this girl change his outlook on life and open him up to the beauties of the world? Cue the Shenanigans!

You know, when I first watched this series way back in spring 2023, I was about to pass on it. I mean, this kid was literally talking about killing off one of his classmates! This kid really needed therapy! But having sat through two seasons of watching these two goofy goobers discover each other and, through that discovery, grow and change, I fell in love harder than Bad Bunny fell into the crowd at the Super Bowl Halftime show. I fell so hard, I actually bought both seasons on Blu-Ray! It takes a lot to make it to my anime shelf, and this series made the grade. So you can imagine how excited I was when I heard there would be a movie. Big screen adventures with our short king and his snack-loving queen? Yes, please!

However, just five minutes in, I realized with prodigious disappointment that The Dangers in My Heart had fallen into the dreaded compilation-movie trap: a repackaged summary with minimal new content.

Yes, my dear friends, get ready to sit through 102 minutes of a movie with only about nine minutes of new content at the beginning and the end. Compilation movies, by their very nature, fall in different camps: either they’re a handy cliff notes version of the series with new and interesting material scattered between to keep your attention, such as the 1997 film Neon Genesis Evangelion: Death & Rebirth, or you get a line-for-line, word-for-word, shot-for-shot retelling of the story with little to no new material that reeks of the creators saying “here, have this while we work on another season”. Sadly, this movie falls in the latter category. The creators basically took clips from the anime and just pasted them together with Primary Color’s concert bookending the movie. And to prove this is a cash grab, there’s a line in the beginning where Kyotaro says that a whole lot more happened after the confession, but “we’ll save all that for some other time.” And he says this over shots that are clearly from an as-yet unreleased third season! Why even make this a theatrical movie if this weren’t a cash grab? Just make this an OVA direct-to-streaming movie and give us the third season!

I just feel there was so much wasted potential. There’s plenty of source material to make a decent movie and still have plenty for a third season. Heck, you could even do a movie showing key events through Yamada’s POV! How awesome would it be to know what makes Yamada tick, and what she sees in Kyotaro that makes her get the doki-dokis? What does she see in his swirly blue eyes that makes her want to love and protect our little dork? Also, while it is understood that compilation movies only take key moments from the series and edit them into a theatrical format, I feel there were some key moments that would’ve helped not only show their development but also the character development of our boy Kyotaro. I would’ve liked to see more moments from the show that showed how he changes based on his own merits, not just his relationship with Anna.

On the production side, the new concert scenes are just STUNNING. If you are a fan of Kana Ichikawa, Kyotaro’s sister, you’ll have a lot to love here, as baby girl rocks our socks all the way off! No wonder they gave her a spin-off series! Other than that, there’s nothing to write home about. Some of the new music played over several montages of Kyotaro and Anna is nice, but it only highlights that this is a compilation with nothing new we haven’t seen.

So, where does that leave us with The Dangers In My Heart: The Movie? Well, here’s the thing. If you are brand new to the franchise—I mean, you have NEVER seen the original show before—I would recommend watching it if you want a short, cliff notes breakdown. This is a really good way to get an idea of the kind of relationship Kyotaro and Anna have and how it developed in a quick, easily consumed, trimmed-down format. Just don’t expect to see as much individual character development or world-building as you would get in the series. However, if you have already gone through the series, there’s not much new here to warrant going out of your way to watch it in a theatre. As much as it pains me to say this as a fan of this series who loves and adores these characters and the story of their romance and growth, I wouldn’t recommend this one. Kyo and Anna deserve so much better than a compilation movie. Hate to say it, but this movie really could’ve been an email.

Final Score: 2.5 out of 5

The Dangers in My Heart: The Movie will be available in select theatres in the US on February 16th (Sub) and 18th (Dub) only! Visit the HiDive website for more details.

    1. Yeah, if you haven’t seen the series, or it’s been a while since you watched it, this is the movie for you as it gives you the “best of” moments in a compact format! I hope you enjoy it!
