As we open, a shadowy man schemes to get Kiyotaka Ayanokoji expelled from Tokyo Metropolitan Advanced Nurturing High School and returned to the White Room (a mad science facility where he was raised). The man issues orders to a cloaked figure. The scene then shifts to the main cast of students, who are about to begin their second year of high school. After introducing a new app that rates student ability, the teacher announces an upcoming test in which these second-years will have to partner with incoming freshmen. The students begin to strategize… Ah, and Kiyotaka is aware that one of the first-years is a fellow White Room student bent on sabotaging him. Better hope he doesn’t get paired up with that person, whoever they are…

I really don’t know what to put here that I didn’t already say in my first impressions for season two (2022) and season three (2024), but I’ll try! This is a curious sort of show that manages to be intriguing despite how generally dislikable the cast is. You watch it not because the characters are charismatic, but because at least half of them are manipulative schemers, and you wanna see the gambit pileup that results from all their plots crashing together. Oh, and standard disclaimer: This is season four of an anime, so if the premise interests you, obviously start with the first season. I enjoy this show, as evidenced by the fact that I’m still watching, and would recommend giving season one a shot if you haven’t before. If you have, four episodes of the fourth season dropped at once and are available.
