First Impression: Hanaori-san Still Wants to Fight in the Next Life

Ryusei is NEET who spends all his time holed up in his room playing video games. He’s also a reincarnator from a fantasy world, where he was known as Demon Lord Scarlet Eyes. Then one day Meteor Hanaori, a self-proclaimed “rich, popular, beautiful young woman,” bursts into his room and declares she’s going to kill him. He realizes Meteor is the reincarnation of the fantasy world hero who previously defeated him. After being berated by Meteor for his poor lifestyle choices, Ryusei pulls himself together and gets a job as a teacher…only to end up at the very school the hero attends, teaching her class. What could possibly go wrong?

Bwahahahaha! That was great. The premise (fantasy world characters living in modern Japan) reminds me of The Devil Is a Part-Timer!, and the whole episode is one moment of hilarity after another. This is easily the funniest premiere I’ve watched this season. It’s not just the demon lord and the hero—the rest of the characters we meet are bonkers too. I’d say it’s possible we’ll see some romance develop eventually (Ryusei’s coworker sure hopes so!), but this episode is solidly focused on comedy. If you’re looking for a laugh this summer, I don’t think you’ll do better than this show.

Hanaori-san Still Wants to Fight in the Next Life is streaming on Crunchyroll.
