I wasn’t sure if you’d ever seen the Studio Ghibli film “Kiki’s Delivery Service,” to which I gave an extremely positive review here — http://projectedrealities.wordpress.com/2013/03/30/movie-review-kikis-delivery-service/ — and while part of the premise of the movie is that young Kiki is a witch, all that usually means within the context of the film is that she flies around on a broom and can talk to her cat.
The reason I’m recommending this film is that while it isn’t a “Christian film” per se, Kiki is absolutely one of my favorite characters I’ve ever seen, and she in her exceptional level of maturity would make a fantastic role model even for grown-ups. Thanks for the recommendation! I have seen Kiki’s – I own it and I’ve shown bits of it to my children. It’s definitely a wonderful movie full of values that Christians certainly share. Certainly connections could be made about growing spiritually and Kiki’s own maturity. And besides all that, it’s simply a wonderful film! Miyazaki is, of course, amazing.

I hope when they show it in the Philippines, they have already found a way to change the name Kiki, because that word means one of the unmentionable female body part, lol.
There’s a similar problem with Spanish speaking nations and Laputa: Castle in the Sky (which can be traced back to Swift’s original satire of Gulliver’s Travels…)

Getting hung up on Kiki being a “witch” character is like getting hung up on Wizard of Oz because it has 3 times as many witches in it as Kiki (and there must be that 4th right? The Southern one that nobody mentions). But the Gibli film I’d recommend isn’t actually directed by Miyazaki. It’s Miminosumaseba aka “Whispers of the Heart.” It’s got the Gibli touch but also a sprinkle of slice of life Japan. It’s very down to earth.

Oh, gosh, Whisper of the Heart is AMAZING. It’s my favorite Ghibli film. SO good.

Glad you like Whispers of the Heart. My wife and I watch that in the summer so much (our winter movie is The Hunt for Red October, but that’s just because I’m a nut for submarine flicks). After living in Tokyo for a few years I can say that there are many anime titles that get it wrong when it comes to showing what life there is really like (usually on purpose because… giant robot magical unicorns or something). This one gets it down rather well for the early 1990’s.
