First Impressions: Himouto! Umaru-chan R

Himouto! Umaru-chan was an anime series based on the manga of the same name about a lazy teenage girl living with her older brother. In public she’s pretty, popular, sweet, and gets good grades at school. At home, she’s a lazy bum who sits around and watches anime, plays video games and is generally a slob. Himouto! Umaru-chan R is the second season, continuing the story from the original…if you want to call it much of a story.

The episode, much like the original series, is really a collection of kind of interconnected (mostly not) shorts following Umaru, her brother Taihei, and her friends. It goes from her staying up all night to watch anime to them at school to pulling weeds in their apartment complex. Each time, it’s sillier than the last. It’s a gag series that could have worked as a short-form series, but I’m good with the shorts compiled into one weekly episode. The jokes were overall appropriate for most viewers. During a soccer game there were some odd moments with Ebina, partly to calla ttention to people treating her differently due to her large bust, then also to have an odd moment where a soccer ball bounces off her chest and takes an incredibly odd rebound. Previously on the original series they addressed the ogling Ebina receives for her large breasts rather well. Apart from those moments, I felt it was a relatively harmless, mindless, and silly show. I can handle the silly. I rather enjoy the silly! Here’s to more of this ridiculous creature and her very relatable older brother.
