Picking up 2 years after the conclusion of Root A, in the continued fight between ghouls and the CCG (Commission of Counter Ghoul), a new unit, has been started. This unit, however, is unique in that it is not a normal unit. It is composed of Quinx, humans who have been modified to use Ghoul abilities, such as their own kagune. This group is led by a mysterious half-human, half-ghoul who battles with strange memories surfacing in his conscious mind. We are also introduced to the characters that compose this unit. They’re an interesting bunch that all seem to have their own strengths and shortcomings. As the experimental group attempts to learn to work cohesively, the CCG continues to send them after the more dangerous risks – higher-level ghouls. The ghouls, in response, become more elusive.

Tokyo Ghoul:re is the third season of the Tokyo Ghoul series, preceded by Tokyo Ghoul, and Tokyo Ghoul Root A. While I am a huge fan of the series, and that may present some bias towards the show, I’m also more critical, as I’ve been waiting a long time for the show to come back. I’m not caught up yet in the manga, so I have no expectations of what’s meant to happen according to canon. However, I will say the first episode was very well-done. The introduction of quinx was very interesting, as was their portrayal. It seems that it catches many ghouls off guard, but that many CCG members are also wary of the unit, pointing out “they may as well be ghouls”. Additionally, the first episode showed only 1 familiar character from prior seasons, Akira Mado. I was surprised not to see Kaneki front-and-center after the cliffhanger around him last season. I do suspect (as is backed up by the show’s description, noting the main character’s memories are “slowly reminding him of the person he used to be”) he was in the episode, but just not by the name we know him as. I’m pretty excited to see if my guess is correct, learn more about this “Quinx” project, and anticipate a return of Aogiri Tree (from Root A).
