Another typical romantic comedy, with it’s just-as-typical cast of characters: the athlete with the heart of gold. The background character. The minx…The stalker? And the b….what? ORESUKI: Are You the Only One Who Loves Me, a new romantic comedy based on a light novel series, follows Joro, Cosmos, Himawari, Sun-chan, and Pansy as they navigate love and love triangles where not every holds the same information, or the same intentions.
There’s a lot to unpack in this episode, but I’ll try to without giving too much away. I didn’t have a lot of hope early, but I encourage you to stick it through, not because you know that surprises are coming (it doesn’t take long to understand that the terribly generic setup is purposeful), but because this series might have enough steam to be better than just one that relies on a premise unique to romcoms. In fact, that’s the least attractive part of ORESUKI – what makes me think that this how might be able to sustain and grow is how sharp its comedy is. The writing and timing are impeccable; the show even makes hilarious use of English. Add to that some wonderful animation which can in one scene make you wonder if this is a KyoAni series and in another portray unique expressions that up the level of comedy. There’s depth here, not only in the series itself, but in the people who are making it.
ORESUKI can be streamed on Crunchyroll.
Speaking of romantic comedies, I started watching Toradora(!) last week! 😀
I thought you’d enjoy hearing that since you talked about it a lot here.
I do! For many years it was my favorite anime. I hope you enjoy it!
