In This Corner of the World, one of the most critically acclaimed anime films of recent years, went relatively under the radar. Following the life of the joyful and ditzy Suzu, the film mixes whimsical elements with gut-wrenching realism, taking place in the years leading up to and through WWII, reaching a climax with the bombing of Hiroshima. Our TangleCast team watched it recently and found that even for those who haven’t seen it, there’s much worth discussing, particularly about in what we find our identity.

- We’ve discussed In This Corner of the World before, ranging from a review of the film (Twwk’s A+ was a higher score than our podcasters gave) to a topic our team describes—the importance of family and friends when it comes to loss. Also, appropriate for this month, we used the film to discuss the need to be thankful.

Judy: I had experienced merciless teasing in grades 4-6 from my classmates because of the fact I have a physical challenge. This was when I attended public school (I attended public school in grades K-6). I was really, REALLY miserable.
When I started attending Cotting School (I went to school there in grades 7-12–it was a school for students who have physical challenges), the very first day that I went there, everyone said “Hi” to me!! That meant SOOOO much to me, to have all these people I didn’t know make me feel so welcome, and, it was just wonderful, I was oh so happy, and going there made me much, MUCH happier!! <3 < Cooper: When both my favorite author and his agent, on separate occasions and under different circumstances, gave me their blessing as a writer. That was highly encouraging. Heath: Finding my current group of friends has been perhaps one of the best, most life changing moments in my life so far. Never knew how much I was missing without them. Tyler: Getting to put my wedding ring on my wife. Jimmy: When I was given a new sister by my parents Kenneth See: The day I was saved. Completely charged the trajectory of my life in a big way. The world hasn't been the same since.
