Manga First Impressions: High School Family: Kokosei Kazoku

The first two chapters of High School Family: Kokosei Kazoku dropped this week on Shonen Jump. This new series is from the mind of Ryou Nakama, the mangaka who brought us the slacker samurai series the Chronicles of Isobe. His new series is in a modern setting and centers on a teenage boy named Kotaro who finally is starting high school and excited for what may lie ahead. Then…he sees his father wearing the same school uniform.

Kotaro’s father is also starting high school. The same high school. Then he turns around to see his 8 year old sister in a school uniform. And his Mom. And his cat.

No, I’m not kidding.

Even his cat Gomez passed the entrance exams and they’re all going to high school together. Chapter one covers the premise and chapter two leads into their first day at school.

Kokosei Kazoku is goofy, silly, and I can’t wait to see where it goes. It really snagged my attention with just how off-the-wall ridiculous the premise is. I like me a good gag manga and Nakama seems to have created a fun one with these characters.

I’m not sure how long this gag will be able to maintain the humor levels, but with Mom, Dad, little sister, and cat at school, there are many opportunities for different kinds of silly situations for Kotaro and his family to get into. So yea, so far, I’m interested and plan to add this to my weekly reading rotation.

High School Family: Kokosei Kazoku can be read at Shonen Jump. The most recent chapters are always free.

  1. Kotaro’s parents going to high school despite old age probably won’t be seen as contrived and embarrassing in places like my country at least, and I can see a very accelerated younger sibling triggering protective instincts, but the family cat really brings me back to all those outright contrived high school student characters! XD

  2. […] The comedy in this manga is excellent, but seeing the jokes put into animated form would help them take on a new meaning. For example, watching hilarious scenes like Kotaro’s father telling his boss he’s quitting to go to high school would be side-splittingly funny with movement, color, and creative direction. Overall, this manga is a perfect example of how animation can take a great premise and add a new life to it.[5] […]
