Supernatural shounen adventures in high school. Need I say more? Well, we open with a masked man announcing he’s about to murder the apparent protagonist. The highly athletic Itadori Yuuji loses his grandfather, leaving Itadori alone in the world. Gramps’s dying words are an exhortation to help others and build strong relationships so that Itadori won’t die alone like his grandpa. Itadori puts this into practice when his senpai in the Occult Research Club unleash curses, monsters generated by negative emotions. Along the way he gets help from the terse Fushiguro, who apparently fights curses. Long story short, Itadori eats an ancient, cursed, desiccated finger, which gives him claws, facial tattoos, and extra eyes (I think he might get stronger too, but it’s difficult to tell). He almost gets possessed by the person the finger belonged to, but overcomes it. There is no explanation yet for how these events relate to the opening scene.
This looks to be a very shounen-y shounen show. It’s totally not like anything you’ve seen before. …Okey-dokey, fine, maybe it totally is something you’ve seen before, multiple times over the past couple decades. That doesn’t mean it’s bad, though. Look, anyone reading this post probably already knows whether they like shounen anime of the “orphaned, hot-blooded dude fights monsters to protect everyone” variety. You like those kinds of characters/stories, or you don’t. If that’s your cup of tea, definitely check out JUJUTSU KAISEN. If you’re like me and aren’t necessarily a big fan of this premise, you can probably skip this show without regrets.
