First Impression: King’s RAID: Successors of the Will

There’s a medieval fantasy kingdom. The king is unwell. There was a big war with demons a century ago. The kingdom discriminates against the dark elves. Dark elf mercenaries and their leader Riheet hope to exact revenge on their oppressors. There’s an obviously corrupt noble working with the dark elves, but it’s unclear to what extent they share the same goals. Demons appear in some forest and wipe out a scouting force of knights. Apparent protagonist and apprentice knight Kasel sets off with Frey the priestess to look for their mutual friend Clause, one of the missing knights. Apparently the three grew up in an orphanage together. A few other possibly significant characters appear briefly but don’t actually do anything. There are some brief, cryptic flashbacks that may suggest a traumatic background for Kasel. Oh, and Kasel has bizarre tastes (see below) and the totally shounen protagonist goal of protecting everyone.

My summary of the episode is very stream-of-consciousness, because I’m not entirely sure what’s going on or what kind of story this is supposed to be. In the show’s favor, I was impressed by some really pretty backgrounds that appeared. On the whole, I’d say this episode introduced enough potentially interesting elements that I feel okay recommending it. I don’t know if it will be good, but it might be, so I plan to at least watch another episode or two.
