First Impression: Suppose a Kid From the Last Dungeon Boonies Moved to a Starter Town

Lloyd is kind, helpful, and weak—the very weakest resident, in fact, of the village of Kunlun, which sits outside the “Last Dungeon.” Despite his frailty and lack of stamina, he desires to be a hero, and travels to apply for the soldier academy. Aside other candidates like Selen, the Belt Princess, he’ll try to get in and make his dream come true. However, what everyone else, including his new guardian, the witch Marie, realizes but he does not is that Lloyd has far greater gifts that he realizes.

As if Monty Python and Re: Zero didn’t already warn us against the power of evil rabbits…

The title of this anime gives its idea away—Lloyd may be the weakest in his village, but sitting aside the “Last Dungeon,” those villagers are extraordinary, and so Lloyd is in a class above everyone else in the starter town as he tries to become as soldier. In that sense, the initial episode reminds me of a galaxy far away where another country bumpkin Luke Skywalker joins the military, but as if it was Return of the Jedi Luke (or even better, Mandalorian Luke) who fought against the Empire in Episode IV, a great Jedi against an overwhelmed army. But that image didn’t come right away; episode one of this series starts out slow and had me ready to bolt (it seem incredibly boring), but it quickly turned into something unexpected. I laughed pretty hard a number of times in the episode, not only at the expected mismatch kind of jokes, but because of the outlandish personalities that more than make up for Lloyd’s mundanity. Also noteworthy is that I’m not at all sure where this series is going. Could it be as a harem story? A fantastic adventure? A straight comedy? It could be any or all of those, or something else. And that’ll have me coming back to see what the show is really about and if can keep the laughs and creativity going with a setup that should otherwise wear thin quickly.

Suppose a Kid From the Last Dungeon Boonies Moved to a Starter Town can be streamed through Funimation.
