First Impression: Laid-Back Camp (Yuru Camp), Season 2

Everyone who is really good at something—from Olympians down to kids playing video games—has to start somewhere. For Rin in developing her aptitude in camping, it began by receiving a package from her grandfather and unwrapping it to find a tent, which she assembles inside her house. Bitten by the bug, her dad drops her off to day camp, and through various mishaps she learns that she has much to learn! She’s also now addicted. Fast-forward to present day, and the same bug has infected the entire Outdoor Activities Circle (and friends), who are all working during winter break to save up funds for camping gear. Their next destination? Unknown, except for Rin, who will do a New Year’s camp to kick off the year.

I can’t tell you what a relief it was—and I’m sure the same has been shared by thousands of people on social media and in blogs already—to be able to watch the camping girls after the events of the other day. I’m also having a particularly difficult week with other family matters, so this was much needed. I curled up next my daughter and we streamed episode one, and it was certainly as relaxing an episode as expected. Too relaxing, perhaps? The comedy that makes up the duality of this amazing series was mostly missing, exchanged to bring that extra dose of young Rin (much welcome as she’s become one of my favorite anime characters). But that’s a-ok, as it’s just part of the ebb and flow of the series, and a lovely insight into Shimarin, to boot. With a returning director and wonderful source material, expect Laid-Back Camp to continue the loveliness and fun from season one as we look toward new locales, lots of silly laughs, developing friendships, and what this episode points toward as well—depth of character that we haven’t yet seen.

Laid-Back Camp (Yuru Camp) S2 can be streamed on Crunchyroll.
